Recommended Apps

Various apps are taking advantage of your data. With this list, find suitable free/libre open source replacements.

Disclosures/About this list

This list was compiled independently for lack of a clear and concise list of suitable FLOSS applications. Some of them, such as social media, require you to bring others along to get the most out of it. However, I also strongly encourage you to direct others to this list.

Some of these items were made under one of my many names and brands, such as Blake Site, Blogold Projects, or bleonard252 (on GitHub). These will be distinguished in bold. While I encourage using these, you may prefer the other items on the list to mine. I don't have a problem with that.

Finally, if you want your product added to this list, email me at [email protected] mentioning this list in the subject, and I will consider your product if it falls under the qualifications.

In order to be qualified for this list, it must (be):

  • Free to use for any purpose

  • Free to use from price

  • Use only ethical/neutral advertising, if any

  • Open source; that is, users must be able to build their own copy of the application and modify its code

  • Have no tracking or forced telemetry (this does not include location access on maps/weather as needed, or private tracking features)

  • Respect the user's privacy

  • Have quality

  • Under active development or otherwise stable and up to date

  • Able to be installed or run by a user (not primarily geared toward developers/administrators)

The List

The third column is the list of products I recommend for each category, sorted by highest quality (or arbitrarily). My products are bold.
